Optimizing DPS for the iPad 3, MPA’s Release of Tablet Guidelines, National Magazine Award Finalists, Next Issue Media, and Apps as the Future of E-books

Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week we’re discussing what publishers who use DPS need to know about optimizing for the new iPad, MPA’s tablet metric standards, the National Magazine Award finalists, and more.

  • Digital publishing has been in a tizzy since the release of the new iPad, with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite users scrambling to get accurate information on how to get their content optimized for the new device. Margot Knorr Mancini explains what you can do to make sure your apps work across both new and old devices, on the TFP blog.
  • MPA, the Association of Magazine Media, announced its intention to release a set of guidelines to serve as an industry standard for tablet and e-reader metric reporting. Representatives from Bonnier, Condé Nast, Forbes, Hearst, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Meredith, and Time Inc. aided in the creation of the guidelines. One of the major pain points for magazine publishers moving into the digital market has been the lack of unified standards in tablet metrics and reporting, and this move from MPA could be the push toward standardization that the industry needs.
  • The American Society of Magazine Editors announced the nominees for the National Magazine Awards this week.  The winners will be revealed on Thursday, May 3, at the New York Marriott Marquis. ASME’s digital magazine awards, the Digital Ellies, were held last month.
  • What if you could pay a set monthly price to gain access to many of the most popular digital magazine titles on the market? Next Issue Media has you covered. The company’s new service, described as “Netflix for magazines” by AllThingsD, lets readers peruse unlimited content from 32 titles, without having to subscribe to any particular magazine. This is definitely a strategy to watch, as publishers continue to struggle to find the right digital pricing and subscription formulas.
  • Are apps the future of book publishing? Alex Knapp discusses where the e-book might be headed.
