There’s been no shortage of announcements and articles in recent weeks that highlight women’s roles in the evolving media landscape. Here, we offer a roundup of the latest news:

  • A Politico article that portrayed New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson as “stubborn and condescending” and “unreasonable” spawned reactions from the likes of The Guardian, Fishbowl NY, and Times reporter Brian Stelter that pointed to biased attitudes toward women in leadership roles.
  • Lucy Kaylin has been named Editor in Chief of O, the Oprah Magazine, replacing Susan Casey, who had been in the role for almost four years. Kaylin had served as the publication’s Deputy Editor since 2009. Executive Editor Deborah Way has been promoted to fill the Deputy Editor role.
  • Glamour has hired Yvonne Lao to serve as its first-ever Digital Art Director, as the brand plans to spin off a stand-alone beauty channel from Glamour.com later this year.
  • In a recent interview with Samir Husni, Dwell Media President Michela O’Connor Abrams discussed the shelter title’s success and the role of print in an increasingly digital market.
  • After 13 years at The New York Times, most recently as Deputy Editor, Lisa Tozzi has left the newspaper to join social news site BuzzFeed as News Director.
  • Yahoo has essentially doubled the length of its paid maternity leave benefit to 16 weeks and has added a paid paternity leave benefit of eight weeks. New parents will also be given $500 to spend on household expenses. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer made headlines last year when she returned to work just two weeks after giving birth to a son.
  • Writer, editor, and feminist leader Mary Thom died in a motorcycle accident in Yonkers, N.Y., at the age of 68. She was Editor in Chief at The Women’s Media Center and a former Executive Editor at Ms. magazine.
