It’s been a surprisingly busy summer when it comes to hirings and promotions in the media industry. Catch up on this month’s executive moves in our roundup of some of the latest news highlighting women’s roles in the evolving media landscape:

  • Vanessa K. Bush

    Bush

    Vanessa K. Bush has been named Editor in Chief of Essence magazine. Bush took on the role of acting editor for the publication in February, having served as Executive Editor since 2005.

  • Meredith Corp. announced four promotions this week: Christine Guilfoyle is now VP/Group Publisher for Allrecipes, Every Day with Rachael Ray, and EatingWell; Family Circle Editor in Chief Linda Fears has added VP to her title; Cheryl Brown is now EIC of Allrecipes magazine; and Britta Cleveland has been promoted to Senior VP of Research Solutions.
  • Meredith Kopit Levien is leaving Forbes Media, where she has served as Chief Revenue Officer since 2011, to join The New York Times Co. as Executive Vice President, Advertising.
  • The Times also announced the promotion of Alison Mitchell to National Editor. She had been the newspaper’s Weekend Editor since 2008, and previously spent 15 years at Newsday.
  • Newsweek‘s cover story this week profiles New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson, who was interviewed for the piece. It offers an insightful look at what it’s like to be a female leader of a globally respected news organization in today’s volatile media industry.
  • Elizabeth Schimel will be leaving her position as Executive VP and Chief Digital Officer at Meredith to become President of Condé Nast in China in October. Schimel, who is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, will oversee titles such as Vogue, Self, and Condé Nast Traveler.
  • Lisa Boyars has been named Executive Director for Group Marketing at Hearst Men’s Group. She has been with Condé Nast Media Group since 2007. In addition, Dawn Sheggeby has been promoted from Director of Integrated Marketing at Esquire to Executive Director of Group Strategy and Development at Hearst Men’s Group.
  • Sabine Feldmann is leaving her role as Publisher at More magazine to become Associate Publisher at Glamour. She is also the former publisher of Shape and Teen Vogue. Feldmann is filling the position vacated by Julia Fry, who has moved over to Condé Nast Traveler.
  • In September, Kristine Welker will become VP, Publisher, and Chief Revenue Officer of the magazine Hearst is developing with Dr. Mehmet Oz. Welker has served as VP and Chief Revenue Officer of Hearst Magazines Digital Media since 2010.
  • InStyle has named Amy Synnott Co-Executive Editor of the magazine; she has been with InStyle since 2000, most recently as Beauty Director. In addition, Angela Matusik has been named Executive Editor, Digital.
  • Allure has promoted Stacy Bettman from Advertising Director to Associate Publisher; she has been with the magazine since 2011. In addition, Stacy Nathan has left Marie Claire, where she was Advertising Director, to fill that role at Allure.
  • Guljeet Samra is joining Hearst Magazines UK as Advertising Operations Director across the organization’s digital businesses. She was most recently Director of Advertising Operations at publisher Trinity Mirror.
  • Lucy Byrd has returned to U.S. News & World Report to fill the role of Communications and Public Relations Manager, having served as a Media Booker there from 2008 to 2010. In the interim, she has held roles at Duke University and The Atlantic.
