Adobe InDesign’s Color Theme option, which can be found in the Interface Preferences pane, creates a user interface layer that is shared by other Adobe applications, such as Illustrator, providing a consistent look and feel. The result of this enhancement is a dark background in InDesign dialogs, the Control panel, the toolbar, and all other panels, with an option to make the document pasteboard match the chosen color theme.

Choosing the Color Theme

  1. Select InDesign>Preferences>Interface.
  2. In the Appearance section select the desired Color Theme. The choices include Dark, Medium Dark, Medium Light, and Light.
Note: The Light color theme most closely matches the theme from previous versions of InDesign.
  3. If desired, select the Match Pasteboard to Theme Color checkbox to align the pasteboard color with the Color Theme selected. When this option is deselected, the pasteboard will appear white. Note: This option can also be selected from the View Menu (View>Match Pasteboard to Theme Color).
  4. As you make selections in this window, a preview of the selection will appear in the user interface. Final selections are made when you click OK.

Try out a few different color themes and see what looks best to you!
