Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. Here’s what happened this week in publishing.

  • Meredith Corp. is expanding its stable of brands, which already includes Parents and American Baby magazines, through its acquisition of Disney’s FamilyFun magazine. This is Meredith’s third major purchase in seven months, following the acquisition of Eating Well last June and Every Day with Rachael Ray in October. Meredith will get FamilyFun‘s print and digital magazines, along with the ToyHopper app. “This acquisition further strengthens our leadership position and reach among women in both the parenthood and food spaces, and offers our advertisers additional channels to reach these consumers,” says Tom Harty, Meredith’s national media group president.
  • Rumors have been swirling about Apple’s plans for a media event that will be held in New York City later this month. There’s been much speculation about what Apple will be addressing, including the possibilities of news related to its iBookstore and/or advertising. We’ll have to wait and see!
  • USA Today launched a custom app for Kindle Fire as part of its mobile strategy to be first news source on emerging technologies. According to a press release, the app “features a custom look and design specifically for the tablet with the signature content readers have come to trust from USA Today.”
  • The U.K.’s Guardian newspaper announced that its iPad edition now includes Weekend magazine. According to its blog, the iPad app has been downloaded more than 500,000 times since it launched in October.
