The New iPad and App File Size, Apple Newsstand, How to Select the Right Tools to Create Digital Magazines, Digital Circulation Increases, Adobe CS5.5 Deal, Washingtonian Loses an Editor, Top Magazines on Twitter

Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week we’re discussing how publishers are dealing with larger app file sizes on the new iPad, success for publishers using Apple’s Newsstand, how to select the right tools to create interactive digital content, and more.

  • The Apple Newsstand is paying off for publishers. App analytics firm Distimo is reporting that the top 100 highest-grossing apps in that section of the iPad App Store are pulling in about $70,000 a day in revenue among them.
  • As the e-reader and tablet markets continue to grow, so do the number of available tools to create interactive digital content. It can be a confusing and daunting process for publishers to determine which solutions best fit their needs. This week on the TFP blog, we explored this topic in our post What Publishers Need to Ask Before Creating Digital Magazines.
  • Digital magazine circulation is growing, and fast, but it still has a ways to go before being a serious replacement (in terms of revenue) for print. According to a report released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, digital circulation increased by 125% in just a year but still makes up only about 1% of publishers’ total revenues.
  • Deal Alert: Adobe is offering a free upgrade to CS6 if you buy CS5.5, from now until May 6. Buy CS5.5 now and get CS6 at no additional cost.
  • Washingtonian is losing an editor at large; Jack Limpert announced Monday that after 43 years with the magazine, he is leaving his position. Under Limpert’s direction, Washingtonian won five National Magazine Awards. We at TFP have always enjoyed our work with Washingtonian and Jack, and wish him well in his next venture.
  • Is your publication on Twitter? Many magazine brands are seeing great success by sharing their content and interacting with readers on the social network. Check out min‘s Twitter Watch to see which magazines are leading the pack with the most followers.
