Newsweek Goes Digital-Only, Saving the Book Publishing Industry, Publishers’ Mobile Strategies, Analytics Tools for Pinterest, TFP Tip: When to Update Adobe DPS

Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing the end of print for Newsweek, adopting a mobile-first strategy, analytics tools for Pinterest, and more.

  • Newsweek announced yesterday that its Dec. 31 issue will be the magazine’s last U.S. print edition. The weekly will transition to a digital, subscription-based publication called Newsweek Global, for both tablets and the web, with some content available on The Daily Beast site. Layoffs are expected to be announced as a result of the move.
  • This week, Colin Robinson offered 10 suggestions for saving the book publishing industry. A common thread among them is an emphasis on publishers strengthening their relationships with their target audiences, whether by serving as trusted content curators or selling directly to customers and adopting a print-on-demand model.
  • Is the buzz around having a “mobile first” strategy warranted? An article on Digiday suggests that although providing a good mobile experience is now a must, publishers can’t ignore the fact that most of their revenue is still generated through desktop devices.
  • New analytics platforms for Pinterest are emerging as the virtual-pinboard site continues to experience phenomenal growth. Tools like Pinalytics and Pinfluencer are enabling users to track stats like the number of comments, repins, and likes, as well as pins’ spread to other social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
  • Adobe releases updates to its Digital Publishing Suite every six weeks, but it’s not always clear whether you really need to install the latest version of the tools. TFP’s Cheryl Asselin suggests some key points to consider before upgrading DPS. Check out our DPS Tips blog for this and other helpful hints.
