The summer might be coming to a close, but the hiring announcements continue to roll along, accompanied by some great profiles of female leaders in the media industry. Here’s our roundup of the latest news highlighting women’s roles in the evolving media landscape:

  • Hearst has announced three new hires. Amy Odell, who was Editor of the fashion sector on BuzzFeed, is the new Editor of Cosmopolitan.com, and Leah Chernikoff, Editorial Director of the fashion blog Fashionista, has been named Editor of Elle.com. The company has also hired SpinMedia’s Annie Fox to serve as Director of Programming at Hearst.
  • Folio recently featured a Q&A with Laura Frerer-Schmidt, Publisher of Rodale’s Women’s Health magazine, in which she discussed branding strategies, and how the “wellness trend” and digital are driving ad opportunities.
  • A New Republic Q&A with New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson tackled the topics of her management style, the newspapers ideology, and the recent sale of the Washington Post.
  • Poynter interviewed Kaylen Ralph, who, with Joanna Demkiewicz, just launched an online and print magazine called The Riveter that focuses on publishing “longform storytelling by women, for everyone.”
  • Mayer's Fortune interview

    Yahoo’s Mayer

Vogue has published an in-depth profile of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer that covers a range of topics, including her shyness, her geekiness, her sense of style (this is Vogue, after all), motherhood, and being a woman in a male-dominated industry.

  • Elle just released its 2013 Power Survey, and although the magazine describes the results as “surprisingly positive, occasionally infuriating,” I had a hard time discerning a lot of positive trends in the related slideshow. (Stats indicating that more than one-third of male and female leaders think women aren’t tough enough to lead, and that the U.S. is one of only eight countries in the world that doesn’t mandate paid maternity leave, are pretty frustrating to see.) Elle Editor in Chief Robbie Myers appeared on the Today show last week to discuss the survey results.
