Here’s our roundup of the latest news highlighting women’s roles in the evolving media landscape as we head into Fall:

  • Carrie Cullen has been named Associate Publisher, Advertising, for HGTV Magazine. The move represents a promotion from the role of Advertising Director. Previously, she was Sales Development Director for Food Network Magazine.
  • Capitol File has hired Elizabeth Thorp as its new Editor in Chief. Thorp has worked in public affairs roles and has written for a variety of publications, including the Washingtonian, The Huffington Post, and National Geographic. She has also served as President and CEO of EDT Communications Inc. and is the founder of upscale family travel website Poshbrood.com.
  • Yahoo logoMegan Liberman is the new Editor in Chief of Yahoo News, where she is expected to “lead a major expansion.” She comes to Yahoo from The New York Times, where she was Deputy News Editor and creator of the Motherlode parenting blog.
  • Colleen McCarthy is also exiting The New York Times, where she most recently served as Director of Business Development, to take on the role of Executive Director of Business Development for New York magazine.
  • Judith Daniels, the founding Editor in Chief of Savvy, which The New York Times describes as “the first glossy magazine aimed at executive women,” has passed away at the age of 74. Daniels was also Managing Editor of New York magazine, The Village Voice, and Life magazine.
  • Editor & Publisher has compiled a list of 10 women in media to watch that includes journalists, editors, executives, and company presidents. Each of them shares advice for aspiring women in the newspaper industry and discusses their take on challenges and opportunities in media.
  • Poynter took a look at three tools that are being used to assess women’s participation in digital journalism and social media, as both authors and sources, in order to encourage news organizations and individuals to close the gender gap: whowritesfor.com, which catalogs the gender breakdown of writers featured on the front page of NYTimes.com; and GenderTracker, which is being developed to evaluate gender balance in traditional journalism, citizen media, and advocacy organizations; and Twee-Q, an interactive self-assessment tool to measure equality on Twitter.
  • In response to a lack of women on Wired‘s recent list of the “best reporters, writers and thinkers on the Internet,” The Huffington Post compiled its own list of 28 female thinkers you should know, along with their Twitter handles, so you can keep up with them yourself via social media.
  • In a conversation with The Atlantic Wire, Glamour Editor in Chief Cindi Leive shared her favorite magazines and news sources. Find out what makes the cut for this busy publishing exec.
