  • Apple announces iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. “iOS 8 offers simpler, faster, and more intuitive ways to use your device with incredible new features like iCloud Photo Library, a new Messages app, the QuickType keyboard, and an entirely new Health app,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “We’re also giving developers amazing new tools to make managing your health and your home from your devices an integrated, simple, and secure experience.” The new version of OS X is “a powerful new version of OS X redesigned and refined with a fresh, modern look, new apps, and new continuity features that make working across your Mac and iOS devices more fluid than ever.”
  • Shocking changes at Source Interlink Media, shutting down 12 titles, and close to 100 jobs, plus ceasing operation of its Distribution division, which was affected by Time, Inc’s termination of its wholesaler business to Source.
  • Making money with magazine archives? Digiday says it’s working. “It’s the wonderful thing about the digital environment, that these things get new life,” says James Bennet, co-president of The Atlantic.
  • In keeping up with trends, theMediaBriefing shares Five Charts that Explain the State of the Mobile and Tablet Market. The changes? Internet users are dropping, and smartphone users increasing, with smartphone use up 480% since 2009.
  • Condé Nast Traveler launches new travel app called The Gold List.  According to Women’s Wear Daily: The app coincides with the magazine’s new platform and the launch of Traveler’s new Web site in August. Addresses on the app are linked to Google maps, and there’s a “tap the screen to call” feature. There are links to a slide show and tools to help users create their own inspiration boards or photo streams. The listings are filtered by continent, and new hotels, resorts, and cruise lines will be uploaded “pretty instantly,” quotes Dana DeVito, executive director of creative services, adding, “We’re planning a quarterly refresh.”
  • We have two DPS Tips to share with you this week. One explains how to create interactives more easily using Adobe InDesign’s ‘Paste Into’ command, and the other offers an introduction to the Information Screen feature included in DPS v30.
  • There are two infographic picks for you as well: one that examines what it takes to attract readers’ attention through social media, and another that looks at the growth, use, and future of cloud technology.
