Why use hashtags? And where do they work best? This week’s infographic pick from SurePayroll addresses those questions and offers some best practices for successful hashtag campaigns.

As you likely know, hashtags are an easy way to find and follow conversations and track promotions on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other sites. But as our pick reveals, the effects of hashtags vary by platform. For instance, on Twitter, tweets with one or two hashtags see 21% more engagement than those that use three or more. However, on Instagram, posts with 11 or more hashtags get the most interaction.

Here are some other things to keep in mind when launching a campaign:

  • Hashtags work best when they are simple, but not so generic that they’re hard to track.
  • Messages should be clear and slang-free, using capitalization on multiple words.
  • Hashtags can be easily misread, so it’s important to proofread them, removing capitalization to ensure that doesn’t create an unintended word or message.
